Ford 4000 hydraulic oil problems

My neighbor has a Ford 4000 SOS that looks like an 861. He was out cutting hay with it today and after an hour or two the remote hydraulics lost 90% of their power and the trans case was HOT, I would guess in the 150-180* range. Is this normal? I wouldn't think it's normal, but Fords are latin to me and he bought this unit a month or two ago. We checked the oil and it's up and clean, does not smell burnt either. I want to figure this out before he wrecks something.

The transmission housing can get pretty warm on these tractors, but the loss of remotes and extreme heat are likely related. First confirm your neighbor is using a Ford 134 trans/hydraulic fluid or equivalent. Almost all brands have an equivalent, but you need it to meet the Ford 134 specs.

Secondly, the transmission housing should be vented. On the top plate near the location where the cables (shifting and PTO) enter the top plate, there should be a vent to allow the sump to breath.

If he just got the tractor and didn't service the transmission/hydraulic fluid himself, I would reccommend changing both fluids.

Trans will run about 160F normally. Will run about 80-90F above ambient temps, so can be hotter.


But, the remotes are not part of the SOS oil. There may be a diverter valve that is in the wrong position. Or there may be a leak and it may be low on oil. The dip stick under the drivers left cheek.
 
I checked the oil level with the dipstick a dozen times, it was about an inch above the full mark which I figured was par for the heat/expansion part of it. I will have him change the oil and the book tells us to change the filter too, which does not look hard by the book.
