5000 Power steering Leak.....??????

A friend has a ford 5000 Diesel. That has been leaking power steering fluid (moderate leak) with no visible signs of a leak. We were told that it was leaking into the crank case. The oil level does check over full also.
1) How does this happen?
2) What would it take to repair?
Any advise would be a great help to both of us. Thanks for your time and patience with me.

pull the steering pump then the drive gear, behind you well find two seals replace them. sometime that well fix your problem and sometine you just have to replace the pump. if i am thinking right there are two bolts the hold the pump to front housing on engine. not a bad job

If I was certain that it was leaking to the crankcase, I'd just buy a pump...
If I had time or I was just curious I'd take the pump apart and look at it... but I can say that every single one I've ever had apart were worn out. They wear the bushings out, then they cut the housings... which leads to poor steering performance and when they wear enough the seals get elongated leading to the pump losing oil to the crankcase.
I've probably had half a dozen of those pumps apart over the years and I've yet to see one that could be repaired with a seal kit.
I did kit one a few years back to try it... and basically stall for time because I didn't want to pay the 1200 they wanted for the pump and I think it kinda held for 2-3 days worth of work.

There are many sources for those pumps including A&I, Hy-Capacity, NewHolland and probably a few more. I've got some from each with no notable differnece between them other than price... except that the chinese variants are not internally compatiable with an OEM seal kit if that matters to you.
