i was moving along in 6th gear les than 1/2 trottle with a empty manure spreader when the tractor made a grinding noise and stopped moving.pushing in the clutch did not stop noise so I shut down the motor. I had to release the transmission towing lock to get it to move. any comments and thoughts will be greatly appreaciated

Kerry:

I agree with Rick. If the PTO does not work, its almost certainly the torque limiting clutch or transmission input shaft.

I'll add that, in order to stave off other comments.. this machine is really in the 601 series, vs the 600 series, as the SOS were 59+.

good luck with the repair.

Thanks for the responses, there is no pto. I was looking in my service manual and it seems that this diagnosis is correct. Any suggestions on someone in ohio area for repairs?
thanks a bunch

If you have the dual speed pto she will be a 681, and the single speed pto is a 671. the trans bellhousing will hav ethe number, just aft of the starter.

Kerry:

IF it is simply the torque limiting clutch, any good mechanic familiar with Ford tractors should be able to repair it as the job is very similar to a regular clutch job.

If, however, the input shaft splines are worn out you will need either a new or good used shaft or you will need to have your shaft repaired/rebuilt.

You will not know the condition of the shaft until the tractor has been split.

THANKS EVERYONE
I will split old "BOB" this friday. I have cleaned and lubed my pto cable and tube. Does the shifter tube and cable disconnect from the trans cover using the same methods as the pto. Sometimes there are little secrets that only you guys know. Thanks again

No! It does not. Remove 4 screws holding selector to dash. unthread conduit fitting at trans cover. Shift selector to 10th. Slip coupling apart. Disconnect any wiring. See your Ford shop manual for details.
