3000 PTO needs something

When the PTO is engaged, the lever just flops around. If I turn while clipping, the PTO usually jumps out of gear. I have to hold my left foot on the lever to keep it in gear. The shaft does have front-to-back play. What do I need to replace? I have a manual so I can disassemble it. Tomorrow looks to be a pretty day to repair it.

It could be the spring that holds the detent ball in the lever cover is broken.No spring pressure means no no holding pressure on the lever to keep it engaged.

In addition to the detent spring being bad.. did you say that the pto shaft has in / out movement?

need to pull her.. she may have a slipped snap ring.. should be no in/out or side/side play int he shaft at the bearing carrier.
