3000 tach cable

The gauge cluster is new (aftermarket). I bought a Ford cable and installed. Within an hour, the tach stopped. I removed the cluster and unscrewed the cable from the rear of the cluster. The cable was a loose-wire mess.

Question is:
Isn't a 3000 tach cable wound backwards from a 3600 cable? That's the only thing I could come up with. I am just assuming I got the wrong cable. A 3000 runs clockwise and a 3600 runs counter, right? That would explain the cable unwinding.

Does it matter which end goes where?

it shouldn't matter, sounds like you just got a bad cable, you have to think of the load the cable is under, very little. the tach should not offer enough resistace to unwind the cable. take that one back and get another.

Hi,
Check your aftermarket tach for free operation. It could be at fault to cause the cable to unwind.Normally the cables are of good construction.Fit an electric drill to the cable that is installed to the tack.Check the direction of rotation, you may need reverse on the drill. There is both clockwise face(gene driven) and anti clock face on the tacks.
Operate the drill and you will see if there is problems with the aftermarket tack.
I had problems with a nos fomco tack.Turned out that the hour dials were too stiff in the shaft. It destroyed a drive gear in the tack.I slightly reamed the holes on the hour dials, replaced the gear and a drop of light oil and everything is good.
