3 cylinder 4000 hydraulics

Hi guys,
The question this time is, how much difference is there between the ford 4000 3 cylinder hydraulics and the 4 cylinder hydraulics?

My tractor is a 73 4000 and this spring I need to go into the hydraulics and do some work. The 3 pt. leaks down over a period of time. Its not a problem yet but I want to repair it before it becomes one.
I would like to repair it on my schedule and not the tractor's.

How long does it take for the hydraulics to settle down? And are talking with the engine off and maybe an implement on the back?
Consider this: The lift cylinder that raises the 3 point holds about a pint of hyd oil. Your hyd pump is putting out 4+ GALLONS per minute. The problem with bleed down is usually worn seals in in the lift cylinder. But the pump is entirely robust enough to overcome the leaks and make the lift function fine for most uses. I had an 8N that wouldn't hold a plow up for more than a minute or two but even with it's 3 gpm pump it worked the plow fine while the engine was running. Your leak down would have to be pretty severe before I worried about it. If you meant something else with your term leak down, post more information and others here will help you.

Ultradog, you read my meaning right. It takes a couple of hour to leak all the way down with an inplement on the back. With just the lift arms they will have leaked down to the ground over night.

I could live with this but I use if for a lot of things. One is I have a pipe that I hook to the 3pt and use if for lifting what ever comes along and I would like the lift to stay put.
Thanks for your reply though.

(quoted from post at 08:28:43 02/16/09) With the engine running, is your gin pole not staying put?

Sound, with the engine running the gin pole will drop a couple of inches and catch it self and lift back up and than the cycle repeats it self.

How close are the hydraulic systems in operation and design, between the 4 cylinder 4000 and the 3 cylinder 4000?

(quoted from post at 08:06:26 02/17/09) Charlie, do you have your hydraulics set in 'Position' or 'Draft'??
Chris

Chris, the lever is pointing stright up. I believe that is the position control position.
