I am helping a neighbor get his 900 going that has been sitting a while. we tried to pull it but couldn,t get the motor to turn over. Does that thing have some sort of hydralic clutch that does,nt engage unless engine is running. I am not a ford man so I am not familar with that gear shifter what gears are in the up part and what in the down part? Is there some kind of range lever to pull to get it to turn over while pulling? can that tractor be pulled without engine running and in nuetral or does it need hydraulic pressure at all times. any help would be appreciated Thanks John P.S. itis not locked up a new battery and new starter turns it over but is too slow

Thanks everybody, Don,t worry about me being in too low of a gear and sliding tires that don,t happen. I think that the clutch is going out.I can get gears to grind while pulling it but as soon a I let the clutch out it just slips, or whatever. It just has one shifter on top of the tranny. I am sure that SOS models had a small lever under the steering wheel. My main question is that I don,t understand that gearshift is down R 12 and up 345 or what? Thanks again John

Forward 2

Push all the way down and
Back 5 Forward 4

Well - could you tell us which tranny you are dealing with?

You can pull start the 4 & 5 speed machines in high gear - do it all the time (well, I roll down a hill, no shortage of those here...).

If it is a 4 speed with an aux (Sherman, etc. hi-lo) tranny, I would guess putting it in normal range would work, if not anything else - but I'm not sure on that.

I believe you cannot pull start an SoS tranny, & it has a special lever for true nuetral for towing? Not too familiar wth them.

He's talking about up and down positions on shifter. That can only be a five speed.

Provided the clutch is engaging, shifter should be down and back and it should roll the engine.

I'm 80% with you, but an SoS would also go 'up & down' and the part about hydraulics..... Leaves it a bit open for an SoS.

At least we can eliminate the 4 speed & Sherman options. :)

You probably already know this, but when trying to pull start it, make sure the tractor being pulled is in road gear. Put it in too low a gear, and it'll just skid the tires.

Is the engine free. Will it turn over with the starter? Pull the plugs and squirt some oil into the cylinders and leave it set for awhile. Try putting it in high gear and rocking the tractor back and forth to see if engine turns.
