801 engine confusion

While looking for a new 172 cid engine for my 851,I answered an ad for a new 4 cyclinder gas block assembly bought for a 1964 Ford 4000. The seller said a diesel was ordered, but they sent gas and then wouldn't take it back. When I went to inspect the merchandise, I found the block to appear identical to my 172 cid engine except that the top of the head was wider with places for 19 head bolts (mine has 12), only one side would match up with my head. Also the pistons were cupped out and the crankshaft looked heavier with a place for counterweights to be bolted on (mine is one piece, counterweights and all). The serial number on the block was 310609 and 901 was also painted on it. Did they change the motor on the 4000 or is this something different. Looks like it would work on my tractor if I can find a head and everything else fits (oil pan, distributor, etc.)

Hello Clifford, Mr S. is right that is a Diesel block 1958 or 1959 according to the casting number you gave , the 901 marking could have been ear marked for 901 rowcrop on the assembly line then not used or ? Was this a new block or a used one ? Was there a gear on the crank and balancer assembly bolted to the block ? Thanks Tony Jacobs

This is a new block assembly and yes there is a gear on the crank but the weights haven't been added yet. An old man inherited this block from his brother and wants to sell it for $900 which seems pretty cheap. My situation is that I have a gas 851 and it has thrown a rod through the block so unless I buy an old diesel engine for parts and convert my tractor, this deal doesn't do me much good. How hard would it be to convert to diesel? A guy in Indiana offered to sell me a complete diesel engine that he says runs good but has a repaired block from maybe overtightening a headbolt. Any advice as to the direction I should take. I can apparently have a new diesel engine this way as cheap as I can buy a remanufactured gas short block.

Hello Clifford , I have converted from gas to Diesel and from Diesel to gas , that's not the hard part getting all the parts is harder and more expensive. Starting with the new block is good but then after getting and rebuilding the parts , like the head , injection pump , nozzles you be into the project for more than just getting a block and rebuilding your gas engine. Where are you located ? I live in Mass. , I have gas blocks with cranks rods and pistons that just need to be rebuilt but are not blown up and I would be interested in buying that Diesel as I have three other Diesel tractors. What is the casting number on the side of your gas engine ? Thank Tony Jacobs

I understand. I figure that I'd have close to $1700 in the diesel if I bought the block assembly and an old motor for parts, about the same if I buy a remanufactured short block for my gas. I know I can rebuild a gas engine cheaper, I already found an old gas engine I can get for $500 ($350 plus shipping) and $500 for a rebuild kit plus head work and gasket kit gets me out for about 1200 or less. I'm just not sure about rebuilding one, I've never done it and just knowing what needs to be machined, then what bearings to order, etc. could be a problem. I figured I could handle assembly from the short block up. Anyway my casting number is EAF 6015-J and I live in Morganton, NC 28655. You can call me at 828-433-2423 days or 433-5406 nights about getting the diesel block assembly.

Tony I looked at the diesel block on Saturday but didn't buy it because I knew it wouldn't work with my head. If it's still available, I am willing to buy the block and let you reimburse me for it. Would you be willing to send me a check for $900 for the new block assembly and an old gas motor as a core with return shipping prepaid for the diesel block. You'd get a new block for several hundred less than you could buy a remanufactured one, and I'd have a gas block, crank and cam, etc to rebuild for my tractor out of the deal.

That is a diesel engine. The two look alike until you look close. I suppose you could convert your tractor to a diesel, tho I`ve never heard of anyone doing that. If you don`t and want to sell, I bet you won`t have any trouble moving it. Tony Jacobs is the person who knows the most about what will work and what won`t on those models, and I`ll bet he`ll be posting a response soon.
