Hello, I have a 1981 Ford 4600 SU with the 201 diesel engine. Tractor runs like a top except for the white smoke at idle (below 850 RPM). If I come off idle it clears up completely. I removed injectors, cleaned and presure checked. Could this be a pump problem (have CAV pump)? Any suggestions for further check appreciated. Oh, engine shows 5000 hours. Not sure of past history. Thanks, Tom

Tom, I have a 4500 TLB which I rebuilt the motor on last year, it has the same 201 diesel and pump. I have the same condition, it starts at the touch of the key and with a little throttle the exhaust clears up but at idle it smokes all day long. My thinking, based on my experience, is either pump or injectors but since it runs so well I can not justify the cost to rebuild the pump or change the injectors. I have played with my timing but it did not make any difference in the smoke condition. I have tried some additives in the fuel, which maybe helping a little. Hope this helps. Rodger

Thank you all for the great replys. This is what this board is all about! I will take a compression check tomorrow however, the tractor has No significant blowby. The pump timing has not been checked, but Roger, having a similar problem had no luck with timing. I suspect the pump at this point. Will see what the compression tells and go from there. Thanks very much for your suggestions, Tom

White smoke from a diesel is fairly common, usually it is the result of incomplete combustion could be due to a cold engine, the condition of the piston rings or the fuel system is putting more fuel in than the engine can burn, since you dont say the condition corrects itself after it warms up, I would tend to believe one of the latter conditions exist, a compression test would tell the story.

I'd check the injector timing.

Does the engine have alot of blowby? If it does , the white smoke at idle could be due to worn piston rings. And if the hour meter is correct, the engine is probably due for an overhaul if it hasn't been done already.
