The time has come for a heavier duty bush hog... out of curiousity, what size rotorary mower do you use behind a 800-801/ early 4000? How well does your brush hog work?

Thanks,
Tim D.

It all depends on what you expect to cut and on what terrain. A 6ft. is too much for an 800-801 series Ford in most conditions. It would be hard on the tractor and dangerous for the driver. If you are not doing major cutting (quanity), go for the 5, you'll be glad you did. With a 6, it would have to be a light duty cutter and I'd much rather have a heavier duty 5.

I use a 5 ft. behind my 641. I do not cut much grass, mainly black brush. Even with the 5 ft. shredder, it will stall now and then. I have to start cutting high and lower it. albe

You guys must be mowing your yards. A 5' will be plenty big for the 800/801. You might be able to use a 6' on the 4000 if brush and grass are not too heavy. I run a 81, 3600 with a Woods 5' and in heavy stuff its all she wants

My 63 2000 with a hydraulic sickle bar was setup to run a 6' by the VA DOT when new. The wheels are spaced out due to the midmount sickle bar and a 6' hog gets all the way to the edge of the bar cut path. Only in really heavy grass does a 6' hog start to work her - but the SOS lets you tailor the ground speed at will so you never have to stall it out.

I have a light duty 5' and a medium duty 6' rotary cutters. I also have 641 and a 4000(3 cylinder) tractors. I have never considered pulling the 6' with the 641. Although I am sure it would cut grass, I know it would be front end light and loaded. I know the 8xx or 4 cylinder 4000 have much more hp than the 641, but I think they are of similar weight.

I often pull the 5' with the 4000 through some thick rough stuff around my pond faster than I should be going. However, the 6' will absolutely tighten it up in thick stuff and I won't worry 'bout going to fast as I'll be dropping gears. Overall the 6' does a quicker job, but I sure know it is there.

So here is my opinion not knowing what or how much you will be cutting. If you are buying a good medium duty unit so it will last while cutting light and medium grass and bush, get a 6', some front end weights, and be happy. If you are getting a truly heavy mower to cut thick brush, get a 5'. You will be able to lift and cut with it without breaking your tractor.

good luck

From the replies below, I see most folks are using the 6 footers....

I borrowed my father-in-law's Heavy Duty 6' Land Pride, and my ole 64 model 4000 gas becomes a see-saw that has to be steered with the brakes! Heck, this one even made the front of his 3910 light!

Maybe this one is just really heavy..... Seems that a 5 footer is big enough for mine, especially in heavy brush.....

Good Luck Though!

I've been doing research on what I should be pulling behind my Ford 861. The guy at Tractor Supply suggested a 6 footer for my tractor.

I use a 6 foot with a 640. It will mow out your tracks.
