I'm trying to decide between buying a classic tractor (Ford 861) and a relatively modern tractor (MF 253). First a little background - I'm going to be mowing and doing light work on between 20-36 acres (front end loader, post hole digger, etc.). This will be my first tractor. I don't know much about engines, but I'm good with my hands and really want to learn.

The way I'm looking at it, I'm going to have to learn how to work on the tractor either way. I'm guessing that the older tractor will require more maintenance. But I've read that parts are easy to get for the Ford, and it's obvious that there is a very active community more than willing to help a newbie with tips, information, etc.

The tractors I'm looking at are comparable in horse power, features, etc. The main differences (as far as I can tell) are price and hours. The Ford 861 is about half the price, but it will have 3-4 times the hours.

I have a close friend who is a life-long farmer and an auto mechanic. He feels pretty strongly that I should get the newer tractor. But my argument is that the older tractor costs a lot less and it will hold its value. If it ends up being too much work to keep the old machine running or I decide that I made the wrong decision, I should be able to sell it and break even or maybe make a little profit.

Am I crazy considering the old machine? Am I crazy considering the newer machine? Is there a difference in power between a 56 year old tractor with 45 HP and a 13 year old tractor with 45 HP? Are there any implements that the old tractor won't be able to handle? Someone please convince me - one way or the other.

Thanks,

Danny

There is nothing wrong with either tractor that I know of. I would use a couple of things in my decision process though, how many places in town sells parts. NAPA sells filters and has quite a few parts in stock for the 861 but I have no idea about the Massey. If there are 5 places in town that handles Ford parts and 1 that handles Massey then that is a point. The Ford is a simple tractor and easy to learn to work on, I have no idea about the Massey. You might want to go over to the Massey board and ask their opinion about a Massey 35 or 135 and the 253. That should about equate to the model you are talking about here.

I vote for the 861 too. I have a '60 641 I use for bush hogging and grooming our riding arena and a '55 850 w/loader & backhoe for everything else. I have 28 acres to deal with and have been very pleased with these two tractors. They are easy to work on; the old manuals (readily available) are designed for the farmer to do most of the maintenance himself. The folks on this board are very helpful and free with their experience and expertise. I have had no problems finding parts for these tractors and also have an excellent NH Dealer nearby that has an amazing inventory of parts for these older machines.

Not that an 860 isn't a super machine..... but. If you are going to be doing work where getting stuck is a constant possibility, diff lock is a wonderful thing to have. I spent all day yesterday on my 454 International box blading around 60 tons of crusher run and stone into a parking lot. There were many instances where having diff lock made the difference between making a full drag with the full six foot box blade, or stopping. I know about the brake thing (After all I do have a 600 with a heavy front end loader) to stop the spinning wheel, but diff lock is a whole lot better in my opinion. Of course if you forget you have it in and try to turn it does make it a little intersting. Just a little something to consider. I love my Fords, but yesterday I coulda hugged the 454!
BTW diff lock was availiable on 3000 and 4000 3 cylinders.

Remember, everything on that 861 is USA made and easy to fix. I have the 700, a size smaller with narrow front and I love it and use it all the time.
There are a couple of catalogs out there with tons of ford parts. I'll try to find their email address this afternoon.

The 861 gets my vote. My mechanic told me that Massey is a good product until you have to work on it, then the cost of parts makes you regret you bought it. As the others ahead of me stated, the 861 is not "OLD", parts are plentyful and not overly expensive. It is also a very reliable tractor. If you do your part of the preventative maintenance, it will hold up its end of the bargain.

It depends on your time and how you like to spend it. For me I like to spend my time working my tractors, not working on them. For me fixing a tractor is a losing time and money, and working it is pleasurable; for others it is pleasure to tinker around repairing and restoring. You'll just have to decide how valuable your time is and how timely it is to get your farm work finished.

Go for the newer modle if you intend to do any serious work. Get something with live pto and hydraulics. Also diesel is the way to go for power and torque

The 861 is a very good looking tractor that came with diesel(and gas)engines and live PTO.

personaly i would go with the older tractor, for the reasons ya said, it holds value, its parts are cheaper and its pretty much simpler, the other thing is that an 861 isnt all that old and outdated of a tractor,it has most of the functional features of the newer tractor. also i can tell ya that it is definatly not a 56 year old tractor since that would mean it would have had to be made in 1947, the only tractor ford made back then was the ford 2N

Sorry...I don't know where I got 56 years. I'm just bad at math I guess. But I'm definitely looking at an 861. I verified the serial # and everything.

No question for me, I have 7 old ford tractor and my 1960 861 Gas and my 1964 2000 Offset are by far my two favorite tractors. I personally love the styling of the 861 with the gray/red color combination and the eggcrate front grille shell. Hope this helps. Don (MI)
