My property has hundreds of hawthorne bushes and trees. I never would have believed that the thorns could flatten the front tires on my 641, but my tire man showed me the thorns that had worked their way through and punctured the tubes. He would dismount the tires, spread them and feel for the thorns. Unfortunately, there were always thorns that had not worked all the way through. So I kept having flat after flat. Expensive both for the repairs and in time wasted.
I considered replacing the tires, but they are relatively new and show very little wear. Finally the tire man, who could have just sold me new tires, suggested that I have them filled with plastic foam. He directed me to the local industrial tire dealer that foams tires on construction machines and other off road applications that are exposed to nails and other hazards. The industrial dealer laughed about my tires as they had never done any that small, but for about $120, they filled them. Result: NO MORE !@#$% FLATS! The tires are nearly solid and do not "give" like air filled tires, but so far, so good. I was told that it would be almost impossible to dismount the tires without sawing them off, so I would suggest restoring the wheels before having them filled. The foam also adds a bunch of weight, but probably not as much as fluid. So far I have had no trouble with the back tires and as drive wheels, they wear much faster. I don't know if I would foam back tires as it would be costly and make the tires very hard to replace. On the other hand, it would cure the corrosion problems from the tire fluid, if the rim was properly cleaned and painted before tire mounting. Good luck, it worked for me!

Hi Hal I worked for a company that had a manlift that had tires about the same size as a golf carts
tire and they were filled with foam. You didn't want to be 25 feet in the air and get a blowout

Jim, I'd rather not imagine myself 25 feet in the air in a manlift under any circumstances. Airplanes go WAY too high, so I don't fly either...Al English

Hi Hal, thanks for the info. About a week ago on the N series forum there was a discussion on this same topic. I mentioned the option you took, but had never known anyone who had done it on a tractor. Since there was so much interest, maybe you would consider putting a post about this on the N board. Thanks...Al English
