The starter should be able to handle the 12 volt conversion without any problems. The 6 volt starters have heavier windings than 12 volt starters anyway. I would definately rebuild the starter that you have. It sounds to me like you have a mechanical problem. I often replace the orginial bushings with sealed bearings on starters that I rebuild for myself. They run much smoother with bearings. Take the starter apart, clean it well with brake/electrical cleaner. If the bushings are worn, sometimes it allows the armature to rub the permenant magnets and bind the starter. The bendix can also be worn or very dirty. Make sure that it slides easily. Check the condition of the brushes, brush springs, and the comutator. If it is very scored, restore the surface with emory cloth. Unless you have open windings, starters are very rebuildable. Save yourself some money! Hope this helps, Tim D.
