I just recently purchased a 4000 from a dealer who converted the SOS to an 8 speed with a transmission and rear end purchased from a technical school. Seems like a few of these Ford donated units are still around. Mine is like new. Sounds like what you found would make someone a great project for an upgrade. Probably never been in the dirt.

Any idea how I could find out what trade schools Ford donated to? I'm looking for exactly what you referred to- ie a good used manual trans to replace the failed sos in my 4000; it is 3cyl dsl, 1964 I think, but not certain; enquiries I've made so far seem to confirm that both the trans and rear end are required to do this conversion
