Looking to purchase a tractor for snow removal, brush hogging, etc... I am considering a 650 or and 8N would appreciate some advice about which to choose.

We recently switched from a 9N to an 850
(850 is just like 650 w/bigger engine/driveline).
Why? - Didn't like working on 9N, 850 is easier to work on. - 850 better, brakes, axle seals, engine, etc. - Wanted more power (650 somewhat more than 8N). - Live hydraulics is nice (but, the cost is that it probably isn't as reliable as 8N).

8Ns DO have parts availability going for them, and
a lot of them have the Hi/Lo Sherman gear boxes.

If I had to do it again, I would hold-out for a 660/860 w/Live PTO,
it opens up a whole new world of what you can
do with your tractor.
...as mentioned on other response, cool things
like snow-blowers become practical w/Live PTO.

We have not had much success pushing snow with
a 2WD tractor, it gets stuck surpisingly easily.

In correction to the one post the 650 doesn't have live PTO. The 650 has live hydraulics the 8N does not, the 650 has a more powerfull engine and a 5 speed transmission, the 8N only has a 4 speed transmission. For mowing you can get an overrunning clutch for your PTO which works great but it won't work on a snow blower, but if you are using a blade you will get along fine. If you are going to use a snow blower you should look for a tractor with live PTO.

I guess the major differences would be live PTO on the 650 and an overhead valve engine, not a big deal to some. Using a two wheel drive tractor for snow removal can get hairy at times, gotta plan your next move carefully or you'll be looking for someone with a good long chain..haha..been there!! Cultivated tractor tires are great on unfrozen ground but can be past helpless in snow or ice, better get a set of tire chains while your at it.

I have no experence with the 650, only the 8N. I use my 8N for hog'n mostly. Does a fine job with a 5 footer. I mow about 7 acrs, any more and I would buy a bigger tractor. While mowing, the lack of live hydraulics/pto hasn't been much of a problem.

We have no snow in Houston, I believe it snowed 3 or 4 times in the 30 years I have lived here. Not much chance to use a snow plow.
