I would use the preform type seal (no tool needed) There shouldn't be any shims between the block and main bearing caps. The taper side to the back. If you can vision an oil seal split in two. The oil would be on the spring side.

GEO, I always seem to do better with the rope. Is there a reason to use the preformed? I'm not being a smart alec. I seriously would like to know.

I have a 1997 F-350. Does anyone know have any idea why 4 left rear seals have blown since March 2000?
