Hi/Low transmission on a tea 20

I was recently looking at an advertisement on the net and a person was selling a Tea 20 with Hi/Low transmission.
I have seen photos of a Hi/Low transmission box and it fits between the rear of the gearbox and diff and believe that this is an aftermarket conversion.
This one does not have that setup but I can see on the differential dip stick cover there is a lever relating to the Hi/Low transmission and it looks as if it could be original as the dip stick is moved to make way for this lever which is in the middle.
Would this be a rare factory option?

I believe you are looking at a Howard reduction box that fits within the existing housing. They are very weak and usually the gears get damaged in the low ratio. I have one in my tractor and it still works fine in high range but jumps out of gear in the low range.

"Weak" is determined by the amount of force exerted upon the gear box. If this is a Howard, it will not pull stumps out of your yard. It was primarily designed to slow the tractor speed and maintain PTO speed such as needed on a tiller.
The original Hupp transmission is another unit even weaker than the Howard. The wife's Fergy has both of those. Tne Everett trans is another stort and has a gear ratio of 98:1 (if memory serves) It is a very stout transmission and can handle some abuse. This summer should give me the time I need to add the Everett to her Fergy and update the Hupp with better pieces.
Still not good for pulling stumps.

No it is nothing rare, it is a Howard Reduction Gearbox for use with the Rotovator, this lowered the tractor forward speed down to allow the Rotovator to make a proper tilth. It should never be used for pulling as it is not strong enough and will easily break, there are no spare parts available now. This gearbox simply held the forward speed down as the Rotovator tended to push the tractor forward and it couldn't do it's job...John(UK)[email protected]

Brad. As John says, a Howard and not so attractive.

If ever you see a Fergy fitted with an original, working Ferguson Epicyclic Reduction Gear - the additional "box" between the gear box and back end that extends the tractor length by around 8 inches, let me know as I will buy the tractor, anywhere in Australia, sight unseen.

Thanks

Bob

Bob (Aust) I was looking through the forums archives and saw a photo you posted on the Ferguson Epicyclic Reduction Gear. It looks impressive and I think it said that this attachment gave a live PTO which would be great to have.
It must have been an expensive option if so few can be found.
I think it said that you have been searching for one for approx 20years, a long time to be looking.
Reminds me of a guy here in Australia that I know that owned a genuine Ford Falcon GTHO Phase 3 that was stolen over 35 years ago and he is still looking for it.
Regards Brad

I remember seeing the odd Ferguson reduction box 20 or 30 years ago. They weren't common but came up occasionally and had no great value.

Now they seem very rare, mostly in the hands of collectors I suspect.
