Project on hold.

I originally estimated the rebuild for the tractor to be about 2,500 for the entire tractor, but the engine is so warn out that pretty much all parts inside the engine will need to be replace, including the crank shaft because of deep gouges. I estimated that I will have to spend between 1,500 to 2,000 on the engine alone. I just don’t have the money at this time because I am between jobs and back in college. After all, I don’t need the tractor because I have .24 acres, too small to turn the tractor around. I was doing this for my wife because it belongs to her grandfather and it was in her family for over 40 years. The grandfather never used oil filter, air filter, thermostat, etc so the parts are so warn out and there were metal debris all over inside the engine and it got into the rod bearings and other bearings. The good news, I will not scrap it, so some day in the future it will be restored. For now, I am putting it all back together so no parts will be lost.

Ulysses,

Oh boy. Now aren't you happy you had a machinist check the crank etc before you bought hundreds or thousands worth of parts? If you will be away at school for a few more years, you might want to consider selling this one, or Jeff's offer if you still have time and bucks to spare- but I came too close to the same situation this winter, actually, if I didn't have my own welding and machining equipment- lathe, bridgeport and surface grinder, I would be under water like these mc mansions in the news. Can't win 'em all, but ya could have done worse. good luck with the tractor and your courses.

sounds like you have your wife on-board with the rebuild.... that is 2/3 the battle. It's all down hill from there!

LOL. Yeah, I am still buying the parts as they pop up on ebay or if someone from here is selling something. In about a year or so, I will resume the project. Right now, I am putting everything back together, I had it tear down to bare block, image that! The block has not been checked yet, there is no company around here that does acid bath, so I will have to ship it or take a long drive in the future.
