Fried my new ammeter gauge

I am not sure what happened. I just finished up my 6v to 12v conversion

New 12v regulator
used 12v generator
New key switch
New Ammeter

After I started it up it ran good, then I shut down and noticed the gauge had smoke. Now it does not work.

I drove the tractor for a few hours after that and the meter did not work, but my battery was charging.

Any suggestions?

After installing the alternator and regulator did you remember to switch the wires around on the amp. gauge?

It was a new gauge and a new generator.
So I wired it the first time.

What would happen if I switched the wires?
Wouldn't it just read opposite?

(quoted from post at 19:12:24 05/24/10) Yes. Either way it should not of fried.

The odd thing is that it seemed to fry after I shut the tractor off.
The entire gauge filled with rolling smoke.

With generator and regulator did you polarize the generator after it was installed?

Most amp meters mount with an insulator on the two hot posts. Did one of the posts get shorted to ground?

Contact points in cutout side of voltage regulator could be stuck.

Defective new amp meter?

Meter will work connected either way but needs to connect to show discharge with lights/ignition on, engine not running.

I did polarize the generator - even if this was not done would this just show the incorrect direction?

I am not sure if something was shorted - guess I need to remove the gauge.

Defective gauge could be the issue...

Not sure about the regulator - I bought it new with the gauge.

I have a meter, maybe I should put it inline and see what the actual amps are before I replace the gauge.

Also, my 12v battery was near dead, I was going to just let the generator charge it after I had things hooked up. Could this have caused a larger amount of amps to travel through?
