T)-30 Throttle Lever Problem

I recently bought a 1953 TO-30. When I try to increase the speed, the throttle springs back to the beginning position (low). I have a dealer Shop Manual, owner's manual, and parts manual but can't figure out what I need to do. I have figured out that there is a compensator spring missing (part number 21 - 181535M1) but I have no idea where to get one and not sure if that will fix the problem. Also the bolt and nut for the spring retaining clamp (part no 17) is missing. I can probably find a bolt & nut to fix that. I have attached a diagram of the throttle with the part numbers from the parts manual (page 34). Any help on how I can make the throttle work is appreciated.

This site (top left) under Marketplace click on "tractor parts" then follow through, they have the spring. Get that bolt and nut then the spring all hooked up again and I would think it should work properly. Richard

Thanks Richard. I looked for the spring where you said and could not find it. I went to Ferguson > TO 30 > View All Parts but didn't see it. Do you know what category it would be under?

The problem with the throttle lever springing back to low speed is that the friction disk (10) is worn or Glazed or missing, It could also mean simply that the clamp and spring that holds it all together needs tightening. Remove the Air Cleaner and slacken the clamp (17) and compress the spring (16) this should hold the throttle lever. You say that the bolt is missing, this is most likely all that your problem is. If it doesn't hold you will need to fit a new friction disk or you could make one from cork or rubber, if you do this you will need to remove the governor linkage at the front of the tank by slackening the clamp (19) and pull the long rod out. You will then fit a new disk and you will need to reset the engine governor. If you need the information on how to do this email me at [email protected] and I will send it out to you. The compensator spring is available from Sparex dealers part number S43069
they may also have one on this site too, look in the parts section on the left and then under your model of tractor, you should also be able to get one from your local MF dealer It does need that spring or it will not work, there is also a short screwed rod and nut to attach the spring to the Water elbow. .....John

I have the compensating spring ordered.

When looking at the diagram and at my tractor, I can easily tell that one end of the compensating spring hooks on to the compensating L-shaped link.

What does the other end of the compensating spring hook on?

Once I have that figured out I think I will be in business. If getting a bolt in the throttle spring clamp doesn't work I will make me a friction washer. My books says it is 7/16 x 2-1/2 x 1/8" cork.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!

Thanks John. Great information. I didn't see the short screwed rod and nut to attach the compensation spring to the water elbow. I looked in my parts manual on page 12(see picture)and didn't see it there either. I'll have to look at the tractor again Friday when I go back out to the farm to work on it. I REALLY appreciate your help.

John had answered this question below. He said it connected to "a short screwed rod and nut to attach the spring to the Water elbow." I just haven't found it.

THANKS EVERYONE!!!

It is listed on the page showing the throttle linkage and in some lists it is not shown and listed as that at the end of the parts page...John
