Generator/Regulator Problem?

Hi everyone. New to the forum here. I have a Fergie TO-30 (1953 model, 6 volt). I thought I had a regulator problem, so got a replacement reg. but problem persists. With the old regulator, the battery was not charging and no action on the amp meter.

I installed the new regulator, polarized it as the instructions said, however the amp meter now pegs all the way over to negative 30. I traced all the wiring making sure I didn't screwup when changing the reg. I thought maybe the generator changed polarity, so I followed the steps polarizing that according to the dealer's repair manual. I still have the same results. I did unhook the positive battery cable and the engine keeps run....so current must be flowing from the generator. I'm at a lost now.

Anyone else have a problem like this? What am I doing wrong? Any help would be so much appreciated. Thanks.

Engine runs with battery disconnected = generator providing current.
Amp meter reads in reverse.

I'll hazard a guess that the generator is charging but either battery polarity is reversed or more likely the amp meter is connected in reverse?

From the wiring diagram for the 6 volt, positive ground TO35 on the FENA site, amp meter positive (+) connects to the starter solenoid (and battery negative); amp meter negative (-) connects to contact "B" on the regulator.

All this generator/regulator stuff can be confusing. When I first bought my tractor it wasn't charging the battery. I just assumed that either the generator or regulator was not working. It was low on my list of priorities at the time!

One day I decided to revert to a positive-Earth system. Lo and behold, the system started charging again! The previous owner had connected the battery and coil up incorrectly for the generator's polarity.

Thanks guys for the responses. My son, who is a mechanic for Cat will take a look at it this weekend. I'm totally confused on what's going on with the charging system....we'll get it figured out one way or another!
