Ferguson Epicyclic Reduction Gearbox

Anyone know where I can obtain a good Ferguson Epicyclic Reduction Gearbox? Happy to pay a reasonable price and surface freight from around the world.

As a very much second option, will the US Sherman reduction gear fit a TEA20 and are they available in the US?

Not interested in a Howard reduction gear - like Fosters beer, not one of Australia's better inventions!

Thanks

This is the normal state of Howard Reduction Gears:

It appears they were designed primary to reduce forward speed to suit the Howard Rotavator, rather than increase rear wheel torque.

There are no replacement parts available for Howard Reduction Gears.

You'd be very lucky to find a good one, either made in Australia or the later units made in the UK.

The Ferguson Epicyclic Reduction Gear was definitely the real deal!!!

I know nothing about the Sherman but I understand it was a partnership between Sherman and Harry Ferguson.

[b:a304898d7b]HERE[/b:a304898d7b] is a very interesting read on the Sherman and Hupp auxiliary gear boxes for Ford and Ferguson tractors!! It mentions the Howard:

The Howard gear reduction unit mounts to the back of the regular transmission housing and has a shift lever on the side cover where the dipstick was located. The Howard did not affect the pto speed, it only reduced the tractor ground speed. These were originally designed to be used with the Howard Rotovator, a rear mounted rototiller. They were somewhat fragile if abused and broke gears easily. Replacement gears for these units are nearly impossible to find.

I'd be interested in any other references to reduction gearing for Fergy tractors.

Just had a call from an old timer fitter and turner/machinist with his own machinery and tooling that reads this site. He suggested if I can find a Howard, he can modify the gear box to make it more robust and manufacture new gears for any that are damaged!

Nothing was wrong with the Howards . It was the owner/operates who used them incorrectly . The Howard was made specifically for use with the Howard rototillers only . Guys instead used them for pulling purposes which would either break cases or tear gears up in them & or rear end gears . I have a Howard here for my 8n Funk project which may not get done due to my health . If interested , send me your email address & if I should decide not to install it I will email you . God bless, Ken

Bob, While growing up on the farm we had a TO 30 with a Sherman 2 speed. I was escorted to the police station more than once as people in the neighborhood where I was driving did not like to see such a fast tractor in their area. It had to be the speed as we always kept a good quiet muffler on it. My advantage even at an early age was that I was sure I couldn't get into to much trouble as it was agriculture and police couldn't do much to me. However PARENTS was a different story once police let them know. Police told me it was an agriculture item and as such should be used to pull agricultural products. So for a while after that I pulled our wagon around town. Why is time changes people? I get upset now seeing people speeding past our house. LOL :) Richard

[b:7108764c5f]Ken.[/b:7108764c5f] My email address is [email protected] - but wait a day as our web mail is off line at present. The Howard was originally an Aussie invention, later manufactured in the UK.

[b:7108764c5f]Richard.[/b:7108764c5f] I saw that on the web site I linked to - amazing, various Sherman models with both overdrive and reduction gears! Do you know if a Sherman will fit in a TEA20?

Bob -- the thought of a Sherman in my TEA20 has also kept me daydreaming. The following tantalizing tidbit from John Smith's website is intriguing...

"The one other Sherman combination available was the model made specifically for the Ferguson TO-20 and TO-30. It was painted a lighter gray, had a modified lower case for clearance of the Ferguson countershaft cap and a modified top cover. The Ford Sherman will NOT fit a Ferguson tractor but the Ferguson model Sherman WILL fit a Ford."

*Update* - just send the question off to John Smith. I'll report any answer...

like Fosters beer, not one of Australia's better inventions

I figured you all kept the good beer down there and shipped the rejects to the rest of the world. LOL

Like Fosters beer, invented and made in Australia, found unsuccessful, production moved overseas.....

Conversely, the Howard Rota-Vator (spelling?) was terribly popular 40 or 50 years ago, especially amongst market gardeners. Many are still in service.

The response from John Smith

"The Sherman that fits the TO-20 and TO-30 is fairly scarce (and expensive) and I have several people who want one. Unfortunately, I don't have any available right now. As far as fitting the TEA-20, I don't have any idea..."

So, the next question might be, is a TEA 20 the same tractor from the clutch back as the TO 20? If it is, the TO Sherman might indeed be a fit.
