I was given a Harry Ferguson plow, model 12-AO-28, that I have fully disassembled to give it a fresh coat of paint. Now that Im getting the rust off Im seeing that it was painted red. I was under the impression these came in grey only but Ive yet to see any trace of grey.

Id like to paint it in its original color. Is it possible this came new painted red?

Yes, painted grey from factory. The red may be primer.

I doubt that Harry Ferguson ever made plows. They contracted the attachment to other companies that specialized in those. I have a Dearborn cultivator and a Ferguson cultivator, identical except for the name plate...and the Ferguson one also has a second name plate that says (from memory, might be wrong) Cincinnati Machine. Your Ferguson plow might have come with either red or grey paint, depending on the day it was made.

Sherman built the Ferguson plows. Your tag should have Ferguson-Sherman on bottom edge. All were gray even the plows that Ford sold for the early 9ns etc. until the big lawsuit between Ford and Ferguson. After this Ford had Dearborn equipment. Ferguson -Sherman even built the plows for Fordson tractors. This was because Harry Ferguson designed and built the three point lift that is still being used today on all tractors.

Ferguson-Sherman was dissolved in 1942, I believe, because the Sherman Brothers couldn't get along with Harry (a recurring theme). Thereafter, variations of Ferguson tags were used until the split with Ford, when the tags began to read Harry Ferguson, Inc. After 1953, the tags said Massey-Harris-Ferguson until the merging of the brands was finalized in 1958. Pittsburgh Forgings of Coraopolis, PA built many tillage implements for Ferguson, plows may have been included. I have a book somewhere that lists all the suppliers and what they made.

They did not use red untill after Ferguson and Massey Harris joind and the Name Became MasseyFerguson. Or MF. Even the very old ones that also carried the Ford name were grey. I have a 2-12 inch plow cannot tell you model on tag but Dad bought it new in may of 44 with a new 2N tractor that I also still have. The first red plows came out with the 8N as 1948 models and carried the Dearborn name and were the same red as the tractor at that time. That tractor and plow came to live with me when I was 9 months old. The tractor and plow are stored at a friends about 60 mile from where I live so cannot check info on tag. I do know Dad repainted both tractor and plow not long after the 8N's came out.

Thanks for the reply. This plow has a Ferguson tag and has never been painted grey unless someone completely stripped the paint and repainted it red. I scratched some of the red off near the serial tag and got nothing but bare metal. Third Party Image

I am no detective but looks a bit like splashes of red on the tag. Quite an effort to possibly blast and repaint red but leave the tag with evidence. I am guilty of painting a new blade to match a TO35 red and grey, so I could see a persons desire to match a plow to an 8N!

I was just looking at the Ferguson subsoiler that's been leaning against the wall in the back of the shed. My grandfather bought it new in the mid 50s. It's still functional, but there's almost no paint left on it. It's looked like that ever since I can remember (1980ish). I don't think the paint used on the Ferguson implements was all that good to start with, so if this plow also had all of its paint flake off, it may look like somebody stripped it before it was repainted red.
