I just picked up a Ferguson TO-30 with a bad starter. I was told that a 12 volt starter for a MF 35 Gas
will fit the TO-30. It has a 12 volt alternator on now so I would like to go to a 12 volt starter. Open
for suggestions.

You can get a 12V starter if you feel the need. The wife's TO-20 is still running a 6V starter on 12V. That's been about 20 years and roughly 90 hours on the electrical hour meter that I added to that machine.
12V just makes it spin faster. Trick is to keep that engine tuned up for fast, easy starts.
If you crank for 30 seconds, let cool for 2 minutes before cranking again.
YMMV.

I would call technical assistance here at YESTRDAYS TRACTORS and ask your question.
Yesterday's Tractors advertises as per below:

Starter, 12 Volt - This new 12 volt starter with drive is for tractor models TO20, TO30, 35, 50, 65, 202, 204, 302, 356, TO35. Verify number off old starter. Overall length is 12.5 inches (PLEASE VERIFY OVERALL LENGTH OF YOUR OLD STARTER. THIS MAY NOT FIT YOUR TRACTOR IF YOUR OLD STARTER IS SHORTER THAN 12.5 InchES), Diameter is 4 inches, 2 bolt center-to-center is 4.25 inches. Replaces the Delco number 1107226 and the original equipment numbers: 181541M91, 1109457, 182454M92, 1107654, 190004M91, 1107226 and TISCO starters 7877-EX, 81271-EX, 85451-EX, 4858MFGXL_12V, and 1900348M91. (Item #: 160371, Ref: 1107226)

The original starter will work fine on 12 volts just spins faster. You may want to see if local auto parts store has a rebuild service if starter is bad. Usually they will rebuild your shell with new, just verify that with parts store before you have the job done.

Not sure, there were some differences in the flywheel and starter length.

How bad is the starter? Possibly it's an easy fix.

Compare carefully if you get a different starter, measure, count the gear teeth. Don't trade your original in until you know the one you get it right!

And you can run a 6v starter on 12v. Just be very deliberate about your starting techniques. Plan ahead, only start it as few times as necessary. Keep the fuel and ignition system in good repair for easy starts, no marathon cranking! Wait between start attempts to be sure the engine has completely stopped before trying again. Engaging the starter with the engine rebounding backward off a compression stroke can break the nose cone!
