TO 35 Stuck in 3rd Gear

Hi all,

I have a 1957 TO 35 with a dual range 3 speed, that’s stuck in 3rd gear. The shift lever seems to be in neutral position, but won’t move in any direction.

I’m told I may be able to free it up through the filler hole, but not sure how to attempt this. Any advice?

Thanks in advance!
Steve

Place the Hi/Lo lever in center-neutral position, this removes any gear tension. Remove the oil fill cap and use a long tool to move the two/three shift fork back to
neutral. When the shift lever will cross over again you are done. Shift SLOWLY, and it won't happen again. Remember, it aint a Hurst..

Thanks for the reply!

I have the filler cap off, and have a decent view of the insides, but not sure which is the 2/3 shifter fork that I need to move. Since I don’t have a service manual for this tractor, I’ll poke around on the web and look for a diagram of the transmission. Once I figure out which fork I need to move, do I move it forward or towards the back?

Thank you for the help, it s much appreciated!

I believe that the only shift fork that can be moved will be the 2/3 fork. It being stuck in 3rd should lock out movement from any other
fork.

It worked! Once I knew what to do, it took all of ten seconds! I can t thank you both enough!! And you can bet I will shift more slowly and methodically from now on!

Thanks again,
Steve

Make sure to verify the integrity of the rubber shifter boots and the boot on the upper three point attachment. Any of those crack, get hard, or break and water goes right in the transmission, often along those shifter rods you see in there, locking up the shifting. Plus rotting out gears and bearings.

I did that job on the family heirloom 1955 TO-35 tractor last spring.

The set of boots will be less than $7-$10.... meanwhile a single bearing in that trans was $95 (pre-recent inflation) and there were a bunch that had gone bad sitting in water.

The shifter detent springs were corroded from water running to them along the rods in a second 1958 MF35 I got for parts, but got it running plus a steering box rework. It hadn't locked the shifters 'yet' but had the same early indicators.

So you have an idea what is in the OIL FILLER HOLE...
