I have a Ferguson TO-30, serial number TO-6465. I pick it up with a MF 135 last year and it had a leaky & loose rear seal & bearing. Upon investigation, I found that the axle had been broken and welded up, with it looking like an old repair.
It was poorly shimmed and caused the bearing to work loose as well as tear up the seal. I replaced the seal, re-seated the bearing and properly shimmed the axle hub. I have been using it since as a mowing tractor (I have a 6ft belly mover) or pulling a large yard wagon.
I love this tractor. It has guts. I need to redo the electrical system, and put a new head gasket on as I am finding oil in the collant and can see oil seeping out of the head gasket on the side of the engine.
So, this is a keeper. I will only be using it to mow the lawn. The hydraulics need a rebuild, and the belly mower does not need the hydraulics at all. It steerings easily.
So last week I went to mow, and snap, the weld broke. Whomever fixed it before, drilled a hole in both sides of the axle, put a tight pin in, and then welded the shaft. they placed two 1" wide x 4" long strips in the outside diameter of the axle and welded around it. What they didn't do was to cut a deep V in the butt joint and weld it up, so there was very little cross section of the weld holding at the joint.
The axle is a 19 spline. I have a to-20 parts machine and was surprised to find there is a difference in the axles.
So I need another axle or I weld this one up better than was done before.
I am in South Eastern Michigan, does anyone know where I could find an axle?
