Electronic ignition choices

So I have been thinking about installing electronic ignition in my regular-duty Ferguson To30. Ive been running the same set of points for about 5 years, I checked them today and thier showing some wear. I had thought that when it was time to change points Id just do the upgrade.. Ive seen brands such as Igniter, pert ronix and now a new one called Percision spark. Pertronix is all over the web as is Igniter, but Percision spark is new to me, its only 66$ with a 5 year warranty on fleabaywhich is about half the cost of the other two brands.. any thoughts? Anyone ever use the lesser known brand?

There can't be $5 worth of parts in parts in a pertronix, leaving the market wide open to competition from "The Land of Almost Right"!

hahaha! That was my thoughts too..

Heres what they are.this is supposed to be for a Ferguson TO 30. I dont see a way to hold them in place inside the distributor. There seems to be two small ears across from one another on the edge of the plate this could also be a stock photo as well.

I put the Pertronix in my 35 + 65. Also added a hotter coil to each one. They both run quite well.

In general I'm inclined to go with proven brands. I depend on my tractors - They're not just toys. So they need to be reliable.

At the risk of beating this to death - If you do install electronic ignition increase the spark plug gap. It makes a world of difference.

Pertronix is a proven brand with real live support.

If money is an issue, try the one on Ebay, but good luck collecting the warranty or asking any questions!

Since it has run so well on points, that proves the coil is good and drawing the correct amps. I would leave
it as is, no advantage in a performance coil with a low compression, low speed engine.

If you do install the kit, would be a good time to disassemble the distributor, inspect and lube everything,
especially the centrifugal advance.

I love it.
I am running a 12V system with a 40K coil and a regular set of points.
The internally resistor coil knocks the voltage down to not burn up the points.
Points are only to close a circuit.
Points do not generate any secondary voltage.
the coil does that.

Just because your running a 40K coil does NOT mean it will fire 40K every spark.
Electricity is like moist people. It will only expend as much energy as needed to get the job done.
If it only takes 10K to jump the plug gap, that is all you are going to get.

A good 40K coil will jump a 1/4 inch gap. Your running how wide a plug gap?

I also run a .045 gap on my plugs with the points ignition.
Points fail in the field, and I can file them of real fast, re-gap if needed and get back to the barn.
Electronic fails in the field. . .
Well, I guess I needed the exercise as I walk back to the barn to get tools and another do-dad.
Then I get to walk back out to install that funny wired do-dad and think about the old days when all I had to do was file a set of points to
get me going again but this do-dad sure does make life easier.

I guess I have to throw my 2 cents in.
$66 for, hopefully 5 years verses, what? $12 for a quality set of points for an easy 5 years (you can see how long it's been since I've bought any).
Not in your case, but I think that most folks that install these electronic ignitions are putting a band-aid on another problem or they just don't understand the points system.

Id say your right, I was just considering the option and wanted feedback.. exactly like yours.. thanks all
