1950 TO-30 lLeaking Hydraulic Fluid at Wheel

I replaced the same axle 4 years ago, the receipt shows a gasket and a seal. Do I need to replace again? Or check to be sure there isn't excess bearing wear causing the seal failure? Memory is fuzzy, LOL

I plan to replace brake shoes at the same time, have a buddy that says he can turn the drums.

I replaced the axle in the woods where it broke, have the luxury of doing this job in a garage. Is it straight forward if I read the shop manual?

Thanks!

1950 Ferguson To-30 (Dad bought it new, I've had it since 1994) Original rear tires.

Do follow the manual exactly.

The seal lip points in to stop oil from coming out.

Look at the seal surface on the axle. If it's pitted, set the seal to a new position away from the pitting
and wear.

Be sure to set the axle end play by the book. Too loose and the axle will bounce up and down, beating out
the seal.

Check the oil for water, better run a little low than overfull, keeping the level down away from the axle
and input seal helps.

Thank you for the reply. I assume you are referring to the section in the manual "Packing The Rear Wheel Bearing"? (Page 35)

I don't recall doing this procedure when I replaced the axle in the woods.

So step 7 - "Mount wheels and recheck for axle end play by lowering tractor to the ground." - Does this mean grab the top of the wheel as it sits and try to wiggle side to side?

Thanks!

I think it means while lowering the tractor, watch the axle at the axle housing when the tire hits the ground to see if there is any movement up and down.

Ah, OK, That makes sense. Thanks!
