Noise from front of engine.

I have a question for the Ferguson experts. My T0-20 will start making a sharp clink clink clink sound that comes from the front of the engine at times. Yesterday it was more than usual but cleared up one it warmed up well. The edges of the fan blade do not have any shiny spots indicating it's contacting the shroud. The fan belt is well clear of the alternator fan blades. Could it be coming from the governor? If so how serious do you think it is?

Could also be the water pump, take a few hours, loosen the belt off the water pump and spin pump, also spin alternator. If you dont find the issue within those two items.. remove the hood, radiator, fan blade, hand crank nut and then support the engine with a jack and block of wood, then remove the large carrier bolts, youll have to jack the engine up high enough to remove the crank bolt. Then remove then disconnect governor rod linkage and timing cover bolts to inspect governor. Although Ive never heard a governor make that type of noise Id put money on fan blade, or alternator before governor. Ive had to replace a few of these governors.. its not a bad job.

Try taking the belt off, start it up, see if the noise is still there.

Also check the center bolt of the pulley. It may be loose.

And it very well could be a governor problem. That is a known trouble area.

Thanks guys, I thought about loosening the belt and see what happens, but it's one of dreaded intermittent problems. So unless it want's to sound off that day I won't really know.
I'll check to a loose pulley bolt though.

If you do need to dig into the governor .. the governor system cover on the TO35s I have are cast aluminum, so quite possible on yours too. Be very careful trying to pry the cover off, there are two dowel pins from the cover into the block that like to corrode themselves in place. It's easy to crack the cover trying to wedge anywhere except right next to the pins (and still be careful).

Thanks for that little tidbit. I'll keep that in mind. Haven't gotten to it yet. This week was working on my old Jeep snow plow truck. Couldn't shift the transfer case into low range. Found a grease fitting at the bottom of this little box that the shift lever works in. I had to move the front drive shaft out of the way to get a good connection for the grease gun. so you can imagine how many decades it's been since someone ever bothered to add grease to that. Got it loosened up and it's working again.

I didn't realize how much time had gone by. I have an update. Short story is that the fan was contacting the belt for the side mounted F.E.L. pump at times. I cant' move the pump toward the rear and even if I could then the pulleys wouldn't be lined up. So I noticed that there is plenty of room to move the fan forward.
I did just that, using the thickness of two flat washers on each bolt. Success!
My arm well heal up soon from getting cut on the shroud. :(
