To30 carb issues

Ive been working on this old Ferguson to30 for about 3 weeks now. The last and final job I needed to do is add gas and try and start. Well it hasnt ran in many years, the float was stuck open and I had a mess of gas to clean up. I removed the carburetor and dissembled it. I had a rebuild kit on hand.. or so I thought, its missing stuff, the only thing I could use out of the kit I had was the carb gasket itself and the carb to manifold gasket.. which is really thick. Anyhow I disassembled the carb and soaked over night. This eve I went out and reassembled carb and installed. I set the high speed jet to app. 1 turn out and the idle jet to 7/8 and then 1 turn out. It sputters and tries to start, but no dice. My sediment bowl leaks as well, so one step forward and three steps back. Im ordering some sediment bowl gaskets made of cork tomorrow and a complete rebuild kit, also getting some new Chem tool to soak carb once again. So its back to the drawing board. Any advice is appreciated; this is what the carb is doing, Im getting fuel to the float bowl also when I turn it over it has a weird gurgling sound coming from the carb for about two seconds after trying to start it. Ive rebuilt carbs before including a few of the TSX models in the past. This one has me stumped for now. Ive got great compression and good spark..

The gurgling is a strange symptom.

How bad did it flood? Enough to fill the manifold, overflow into the engine
and air cleaner bowl? Have you checked the oil for gas contamination and
overfill?

That carb is so simple, if it's even close it should run.

Might revisit the ignition, be sure the spark is making it to the plug end of
the wires, in the right order, and timing.

I put a plug on the end of a wire to check for spark and Im getting great spark. Although admittedly I havnt checked timing yet. It sputters like it wants to start, like its running out of gas. Im rechecking screen at the carburetor today.
It didnt flood bad enough to fill up air cleaner bowl, although it did come out of the exhaust. The oil did smell like gas and was changed. The gurgling sound is the compression bleeding off but it is puzzling I dont hear it with the other to30 I have. Its most defiantly coming from the carb. Oddly enough when I took the carb off the intake, it had no gasket. I installed a thicker white gasket that I had on hand. This is puzzling to me to say least.

no, number one plug is damp number four is dry.. which tells me its not getting fuel to the plugs. It does occasionally runfor half a second then dies. Choking it seems to not matter one bit.

Have you checked compression? If it hasn't run for years the valves might be hanging open.

Timing is also suspect if the distributor area has been worked on. Plug wire order maybe? Distributor 180* off? That will cause symptoms similar to what you describe.

A second or two of ether into the carb while cranking will tell a lot about whether it's a fuel problem or something else.

Did you remove jets and use wires to
clean passageways. Use compressed air?
Check the needle and seat for wear and
cleanliness? Soaking does very little.

yes I soaked it, blew it out with compressed air, checked needle seats, as far as I can tell everything is clean my process is normally to soak for a day or so..although, my cleaner is getting weak. Then after soaking I immediately squirt brake clean through all passages and then blow it with compressed air.
Im going to pull the carb off of my running Ferguson tomorrow and install on non running tractor and see if it runs. Ill report back.

Well I switched my carb out from a running to30, the project tractor ran like a champ!!! So at least I know exactly where to go from there, the problem rd carb is soaking in a new gallon of Chem dip, Ill let it soak for a few days and then squirt brake clean through all passages, then blow out with compressed air. Ill report back in a couple of days.

Well after soaking the carb for 2 days, blowing every jet out and making sure easy and every passage is clean, I assembled it yesterday. It ran like a champ! Now I need to figure out my throttle linkage issue, I made a new one, but I think its binding up thats my next small project. On a side note, my good running Ferguson to30 plowed up my garden, disced it, and ran my box blade over it to smooth it out it looks pretty nice. Ill disc it again before planting.
