TO35 Ammeter

How the heck do I get at the ammeter that is positioned high on the dash at 10:00? Is it a big project or am I missing something?
 
Carefully! You should be able to get at it from under the dash with a 1/4 drive ratchet, deep
socket and universal joint. Otherwise open hood pull battery and go from there.

Try going in through the air cleaner boot hole under the hood.

Otherwise it may be necessary to remove the steering wheel, disconnect the oil
line, the wiring under the hood enough to lift the dash off.

I know my stiff old body won't let me contort enough to get under there any
longer!
 
I went from the back of the dash and wiggled and twisted my fingers till the u clamp tightened. Very fiddler.
Oh disconnect the battery, the amp terminal studs spark quite lively. Lol.

I cut two large openings in the back of my dash. Tired of getting cut up anytime I wire some lights, swap out a gauge, etc...

I did this with the dash removed, although it can be done in place with the battery removed.

I used a ratchet with long extension and a 'double-jointed' fitting on top of a long socket.

If you have original 'thumb screw' nuts then you might need a 'plumbers basin wrench', a tiny one.

Light/mirror handy too. And patience.

I would avoid removing the steering wheel and other stuff -- that can be more fiddly than getting the meter out.

I bought a volt meter to replace the broken ammeter (no needle) in mine too.

My other MF35 has a working ammeter but it hardly moves either side of zero so that one might be broken too.
