Why is it hard to start? Turns over too slowly? Use better oil, synthetic preferred, multi-grade.

Doesn't choke like it should? The choke is simple. Brass disk held in a slot with one screw.

Turns fast but won't fire? A bit of heat on the intake manifold works wonders. My father would heat a quart of water to a boil, then pour that on the manifold. Started right up at -20F and that was before he had multi-grade or synthetic oil.

Carb cleaner on the choke and carb will help.

If it's slow to turn over convert it to 12v ... I have my family's 55 TO35 that was always marginal to start, slow turning over, and no start if the battery was anything less than 98% (but otherwise it was the utility workhorse for the farm, must be a million hours on it). I retrieved the tractor this last summer from a dozen years at pasture and did the trans rebuild it needed (locked up from water intrusion and rusted bearings). I went through and replaced the whole electric system outside of the starter and generator while there because I wanted a reliable starting tractor, thinking upgrades would do it. When I got the tractor running again, it was still anemic starting. I replaced the starter (original got rebuilt several times when I was a kid and so I continued my suspicions). When it quit on me while idling, apparently the original generator needs to spin above a certain rpm to charge, I bought a 12v alternator and a 12v coil with integrated resistor. Then used those to convert the tractor to negative ground 12v system. Now it starts with barely a button press, raring to go.

Alternator I used: Chevy mini Denso street-rod 12v-35w 12180-SE with internal regulator. It tucks inside the engine compartment without interference to the steering-suspension linkage swing but costs more than the typical conversion alternator (was $89).

That family of engines have a very good reputation for being easy starters.

I suspect if you get the choke working right, a good set of properly adjusted
points, fresh plugs, a healthy battery and starter, 15w 40 or 10w 30 oil if
it's really cold, it will fire right up on the coldest days!

Im with Steve, good battery and tune up is the electrical side. Fix your choke and you should be fine. Even a slow turning engine will fire up.

No, the Z129 block doesn't have core/frost plugs to install that heater in. You would need the radiator hose heater that John Deere D shows.

That said, I have a hose heater on my TO20 and have never used it. The coldest I have ever started the tractor was at -15 and didn't have a problem and I am still running the original 6 volt system.

I installed a tank heater on my TO20 over 50 years ago and it helps for cold starting.
TO30 should be about the same for installation.

Never had a cold weather starting problem in the 20 years I had a TO-30. Are you sure you have good
points properly set, good distributor cap, good distributor, the timing is properly set, good spark
plug wires, proper settings on the carb, etc.? I used SAE grade 10W40 engine oil and had a 12V
electrical system.

May I ask......is the ground wire from the battery ran directly to a Cap screw / bolt that attaches STARTER to the engine........:)

I had to do the above on my TEA-20.........all is good.
Same on my Ford 2-N....:)

Mine is converted to 12 volts. It possible it's a battery issue..I'll check it out when this nnalert crap goes away

John730911,

Some of your latest posts show when one searches your profile for your posts. Using the name of the illness currently going around the world got several of your last posts blocked by site filters, so it doesn't show on the forums. The owners of the site have said that is an off-limit topic, even though it may get by at times. So, when you recover from your current, not to be named, illness, what do you plan to do?

(quoted from post at 20:58:21 01/25/22) I have no clue why??

In you first post that didn't show you said you planned to do something when you got over your illness. I was just trying to let you know why your posts were not showing up, so we didn't get the info you were trying to post.

If you are asking why that virus isn't allowed that is the choice of the site's owner. Their position is it becomes political too easily and leads to behaviors not wanted on the site, so filters block posts with that word in them. The link below is one recently posted by Kim, the site Administrator.
