Shifter Rails remove without separating trans from engin

I've gone through the manual and the procedures are defined with trans separated from the engine. The manual and parts book detail a "cap" located on each end of the rails. Can I get to the caps if I remove the lower steering box? I don't have a clear pathway to insert a main shaft (needle bearings) as the rails prevent manipulating the gears.

.

The way the shafts are designed you really need to remove the transmission from the tractor because you are pulling parts from one end and then the other end of the transmission.

I had to replace transmission bearings on a TO35 this last spring (a couple of gallons of water under the oil -- replace your shifter boots and avoid the problem). The shifter rods were locked due to corroded detent springs but the water required replacement of several bearings. A few others I replaced just because I was in there. Bonus is you can replace the rubber seals on the input shaft and the PTO shaft seal plus shifter boots so you'll have a long lasting tractor fixing the most common leak paths.

If you want to see the whole process of what is involved watch the youtube channel 'bundy bears' and he has a whole MF165 (same as most of these tractors) trans strip and rebuild.
