I have a 1950 TO20, just fixing for a friend and not sure what to add to the rear end, pretty sure its low. 3 point lift very
sluggish. Anyone have the length of the dipstick, in inches, for the rearend ?? Thanks

.

It's printed on the trans fill cap on the later TO-35s 80w90s gear oil.
Tractor Supply has the 'Traveler' brand gear oil in 2 and 5 gallon quantities.
My TO-35 takes 8 gallons to fill up the trans and rear end. Probably similar for you.

Drain all the oil out and if you see water in it then check for cracked shifter boots and replace.

Fluid should be up to bottom bolt hole on inspection plate. Remove bolt and if fluid comes out it's full (maybe overfull?). You can check dipstick this way. If you are just adding fluid, as your post suggests, you should try to get same fluid that's in it. Originally they had 90 wt. mineral oil, not gear oil. In cold climates motor oil might work best. As noted in other post you can buy it from Tractor Supply, and you also can get it from Napa. It holds 6 gallons, but if you are draining and filling you should put it in slow, about 4-5 gallons and let it sit overnight before adding.

It would have to be nearly empty to effect the pump.

If the 3 point drops rapidly with the engine off or clutch down, and raises slowly with reduced power, could be the piston seals are leaking.

If the lift is jerky and slow the pump valves need attention.

Those are known for collecting water, but even with water mixed in the oil, the lift will still work. Changing the oil won't fix it.
