TO30 DelcoRemy distributor froze up (1111740 3B2)

Been a while since I posted but need some advice.

Was using my TO30 a couple of days ago, just had my carryall hauling around garden tools, finished down at the garden and drove back to the house and parked it. Next day wouldn't crank.

Started looking at things and pulled the cap off the distributor, cranked it over but the rotor wasn't moving. Figured I did something wrong, so I bumped it again and my eyes weren't lying, it wasn't moving.

Marked up how everything was lined up and pulled the distributor. It was all there. Tried to turn it but wouldn't budge. Took off the screw on the oil reservoir and it was dry, added some penetrating fluid and let sit overnight and next morning I could just barely turn it, definitely wasn't right. I knocked the pin out of the that separates the shaft, came apart easily.

I stopped here. The gears inside the tractor look ok with on my slilky camera. No broken or missing teeth. Little shiny.

Before I go any further was wondering if anyone has any tips. Shaft has no lateral movement or play but still no rotation.

Appreciate any help. Hate to retire it.

Easiest solution is replace the distributor.

You might find a used one but it will probably need some attention.

Or take yours apart and see what it needs.

If you replace it be sure to count the teeth on the drive gear. The count must match the original or
the cam will be damaged.

Take it all apart, clean with 3m pad, and lube it all. Put back together and should be okay. I had a similar issue with a TE20 and a TO35.

You were able to turn the engine over with the starter but the distributor shaft wasn't turning, yet the drive gear teeth look okay> Something had to give. I would watch the cam gear while turning the engine over and see if that is turning. You got it all out of time anyway so it won't make any difference.

The Lucas distributor on TEA20 tractors has a pin holding the drive gear fast on the shaft . This shears sometimes giving similar symptoms. I'm not familiar with the TO but it's probably worth looking to see if there is a pin .

There is a thrust washer behind the cam gear IIRC. If that's worn, it could allow the cam to slide back and disengage from the
distributor drive gear. That wouldn't explain the stuck distributor shaft unless it is bent.
