Transmission jumps out of gear

I own a TO20 that I really love. I came across another Fergie a couple of months ago that is kind of neat, and the owner suggested I make him an offer.

It may be a TO30. I forget.

The guy said that the only thing wrong with it is that it jumps out of gear. It apparently has been sitting unused in a barn for some years.

Any idea what normally would cause this, and how hard it would be to repair?

Thanks,

David

It could be as simple as the detent ball springs are rusted away. Easy fix just under the top cover.

Or it could be a worn shift fork or worn gears. Deeper and more expensive.

Remove COVER # 1

Inspect all # 25's and # 26's

Inspect Fork # 28......Reverse Fork...BENT....?????????

Inspect Fork # 27.First & Second Fork..SPEED SHIFTING and or a worn clutch plate has a history of damaging this FORK

Inspect Fork # 29.....Third & Fourth Fork...

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like it may not be anything major.

Can those shift forks be removed from the top, if they need to come out? The idea of splitting the cases is a bit scary.

db4570, a quick way to identify a T0-30 is if it has a door on top of the hood to access the gas tank.

No gas door on top of the TO-30 hood. The TO-35 has the fuel door. Probably the easiest way to tell the difference between a 20 and a 30 is the external oil filter on the TO-30's Z-129 engine.

Thanks for all the information. I wish there was a way to know how severe it is before I decide to buy it.

You say, "If you have children......been married...dealt with the rigors of life... Go for it...

I say: if it hadn't been for all those rigors of life, I might have the energy left for a big project...
