Adjusting a new carb on old 35

After several failed attempts to rebuild the carb I bought a new aftermarket carb. Finally it runs again, however it stalls when load is applied or changing gears I have
to pull the choke knob out or it will die. The old carb never done this but had black smoke all the time, guessing it was running real rich. I need to get this new carb
adjusted so It dosent die when load is applied

You don't say what you have tried to do to adjust the new carb. It also sounds like you may have a vacuum leak.

After trying to rebiuld/adjust the old carb and the tractor setting for over a year, I was afraid to adjust anything much, made a few minor adj but with no change so I quit for now, jsut glad it's actually running and no black smoke. Wasent a vacume leak with the old carb but I will recheck the gaskets. The old carb got water in it and had to be replaced, I thought the engine was shot because of the constant black smoke, the new carb has no smoke at all, just not sure what to adjust on it

Sounds like the main is too lean.

But weak spark can cause the same symptoms. Check the point gap, the distributor shaft for side play, the centrifugal advance. Finally the spark quality at the plug end of each wire. Should have 1/4" spark to ground.

Look everything else over, compression, valve lash, thermostat in and working, air cleaner serviced and free flowing. The carb can only work as well as the other engine components.

To set the high speed jet, the larger screw, with the engine up to operating temperature, choke open, set the engine down to a slow idle, open the throttle suddenly, listen to the response, if it tries to die or hesitate, open the main screw 1/4 turn. Keep repeating the test, backing the screw out 1/4 turn each time until it will take sudden throttle without hesitation. A puff of black smoke is acceptable.

Save the old carb, the iron castings are desirable, may come in handy some day.
