To20 oil change

Hi everyone been a while since been on the forum. But doing my second since I have owned the to20 tractor and the last time I changed it I pulled the bottom plate that holds the oil filter in it had no oil filter in it. Instead it had a big screen the diameter was about the size of the filter so I just left the screen in it because the oil filter would not go into it. I talked to a guy that knows factors like the back of his hand he said yes they can have a filter or a screen. Is he right or no? Given my tractor is a 1949 so things might differ because o years?
 
Direct quote from Dealer shop manual.My TO20 is assembled as described below.
"The oil filter element surrounds the standpipe from the center main bearing and fits inside the oil screen."
What is the part number of your filter that won't fit?
 
There is an element/canister filter for the TO20 the picture will show it. The parts are on this website, you should also get a new cover gasket, part 29, the one with the filter does not fit it.
