Polarize battery

So I have looked everywhere and cannot find this simple information. When you polarize the battery is it done with the engine rumor not.? If not is the
switch 9n or of? Or does it matter?
Then how can you tell other that the spark that it is done!

Thanks.

You polarize the generator, not the battery, not the regulator. Do it with engine not running, switch off, battery connected.

Polarizing shoots a brief burst of current through the field coils which magnetizes the iron pole pieces in the center of the field coils.

Type A system, momentarily jumper from hot battery source to generator armature post. Touch the post nut, not the threads. If you arc and burn the threads you may have a hard time getting the nut off without damaging the internal connection.

If you get a brief arc spark you should be done.

IF I need to polarize a battery that is stone dead, I mean dead dead I hook positive to positive and negative to negative from a good battery . This will set the polarity. Now you can charge it.

I also either turn on the park lights to start a current flow or hook a light bulb up across the terminals to generate current flow.
It also helps if the battery is not older than about 5 years or been sitting dead for an extended time. 2 months, three. . .
