TO-35 Ammeter Pegged?

She's all wired up and seems to be working fine electrically. New wires, new gauges, brand new alternator, etc. Now, the new alternator was purchased from this site. My ammeter when the tractor is running at max speed is absolutely BURIED to the right. That is the +30 side. I'm glad to see it seems to be working, but I am a bit concerned as, frankly, I've never seen a tractor ammeter work and this seems extreme. The Alternator is internally regulated. It does sit more toward the middle when it's idling.

Is this normal? For what it is worth, the battery is pretty new, and I had spent a little time trying to get it started to the point it almost wouldn't turn over, so the battery was a bit discharged.

If the battery was discharged that low you
should probably put it on a battery charger
to get it built back up first. The
alternator is working very hard to charge
it back to where it should be

I totally agree, but it ran out of fuel in the middle of my driveway. LOL. Anyway, it's on the maintainer and was charged fully with no issue. Is that why it was pegged?

Yes, with the battery charged the needle
shouldn't be pegged anymore. If it is
better test the voltage to be sure the
alternator isn't trying to overcharge.
Normally the needle should be just slightly
showing charge, but will probably be
showing a good charge for a few minutes
right after start up from cranking.

It may have pegged it for a few seconds, but should have backed down rather quickly.

Put a volt meter across the battery before putting any run time on it. It should be around 14.5v, anything over 15v something is wrong and will cook the battery, overheat the alternator.

New alternator, may be the cause. What is the amp rating of the alternator? 30+? That would peg it. Maybe shift to a higher rated gauge

That alternator is a 63 amp and will peg the needle after startup on a week battery. It should settle down to show just a slight charge.

Hello, that is probably a 60 amp alternator, the gauge is only meant for 30, eliminate it and put a voltmeter in available on this side or Tractor Supply, that wiring in the dash cannot handle an alternator load and is a fire hazard, run Adele direct heavy cable from the alternator to the battery as if the diode in the alternator fails the battery feeds into the alternator and if the cables not long heavy enough it will catch on fire

I'll look for a voltmeter. The wire is brand new. I just re-wired it. That particular wire is a 10GA with a 40A fuse.
