Electronic Ignition Conversion for TO35

I’m thinking of upgrading to the TO35 Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit, 12 volt negative ground.

The product description for this E.I. kit mentions that the setup works best with the Petronix Flame-Thrower 40,000 volt coil. I do not see this coil for sale on the YT website
but see if for sale on Amazon.

Have any of you paired the Flame-Thrower 40,000 volt coil with the E.I. conversion kit? There are 2 different coils for sale on Amazon. There is a 1.5 ohm (PerTronix 40011) and a
3.0 ohm (PerTronix 40611) coil. Which one is better?

cant answer the question about the resistance values of the coils but do know this.
I had trouble with stuck points and having to regap them quite often. I put the pertronics ignition on 12 years ago and it hasnt failed yet. I had the flame thrower coil and change it out to a standard coil and cant tell any difference.

You are fine with existing coil, it is a marketing game. The coil will only build up what voltage it needs to jump the gap based on the cylinder pressure. Higher voltage would be useful in a higher compression high speed engine.

Nothing will be gained from the high voltage coil.

But, you do need to make sure you have the correct coil or coil/resistor combo.

If in doubt, either check the resistance across the + and - terminals of the coil (out of circuit), or from the - terminal to the ign switch side of the resistor. The reading should be around 3 ohms.

If the resistance is too low, down around 1.5-2.0, ther will be too much load on the Pretronix and it will be short lived and the coil will overheat.

Also spiral core resistor wires are recommended.

If there were a warranty issue with the unit, they will ask about these items.

Flame thrower. Yeah. On my 350 engine running 435 FtLb of torque and multiple spark discharge I run the flame thrower. On a Fergy TO-20 with about 6.5 to 1 compression and a 2500 RPM top speed I don't think so. Unless you like that pretty thing to give you Monopoly money horsepower. Some people like that. A new chrome exhaust tip and they now have an additional 50 HP! Wow!!
With that new electronic ign, you can spread your plug gap out to .045, especially at 12V. That will give you "More Power".
EI is good to replace points. It does not produce power, it is merely a switch to turn on the coil. The engine does not spin fast enough to overwork the coil nor is the compression inside the cylinder high enough to warrant a high voltage to overcome the increased pressure.

I have bought the electronic ignition mod for one tractor, and bought a new electronic dizzy for the other. Both have worked well. I decided to buy Flame Throwers for both. I wanted the best spark I could get for starting at 120 degrees in winter. :) I also recommented increasing the spark gap to about 0.045" otherwise you will get know benefit from a better coil.

Also, the 1.5 ohm coil is for 6 volt systems, so you need the 3.0 ohm version.
