TED 20 Transmission Oil Leak

Hi,

I am new to this, I got my hands on a TED 20 last October and she has been working away faithfully, until recently, when I noticed a puddle.

I have a transmission oil leak from a split/cotter pin, directly beneath the gear lever. I have read about leaks from further forwards, but I was hoping for some guidance before I start taking more bits off to investigate.

Are you asking about the cotter pin hanging from a hole in the bottom of the bell housing?

If so, that is the drain for the bell housing. It is there to let any oil that enters the bell housing drain out. The cotter key keeps dirt from clogging the hole.

Are you sure it is transmission oil? It can be transmission or engine oil from the rear main.

Check the transmission oil level and look for water contamination. If there is water in the transmission, or it is over full, it will leak past the front seal. If the transmission was recently filled through the plug beside the shifter, and the oil was added to quickly, it will leak past the front seal, then stop once the level recedes into the rear housings.

But sometimes the front seal is just bad and will need to be replaced. Not a hard job once the tractor is split. I believe it can be changed from the front, at least my TO35 was changeable from the front.

A normal occurrence and nothing to be really worried about unless it's litres .
An old saying about Fergies " if there's no oil under them there's no oil in them !".
Black oil points to a rear engine seal leak , cleaner oil to a transmission input seal leaking .

No longer a small leak, but now I can see what it is, I have a hole in my tractor! Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to have to fill or weld.

I've tried uploading pictures, but the forum doesn't seem to like it

Please describe location of hole.....?

There is a "HOLE" at 6 o'clock on bellhousing.....not to be plugged..

Hopefully my photo will attach. It looks like it has rusted or something, it is definitely a hole which shouldn't be there. It is definitely transmission oil, it is a hole in the gear box housing. Plus I have
a container with 20l+ of oil in it.

Any suggestions where I start filling a hole like that?

The gear box is cast electron alloy , an amalgam of aluminium and magnesium . It corrodes badly if water lays in the bottom under the oil . It also suffers from electrolytic corrosion , electrolysis , if it isn't insulated from the engine block via the bell housing . Something that happens after a clutch change and no gasket /isolating compound is used . It could be an isolated hole caused by a casting imperfection or the whole box could be rotten . I hope it is the former for your sake.
Welding is dodgy because of the magnesium but it has been done . An epoxy filler properly applied might work . Or if the metal is sound you could try drilling it out larger and tapping a thread for a piece of all thread then cut flush and grind smooth. No danger of swarf contamination , just let the leaking oil wash it clean .
