TO-35 Steering Pitman Arm Source

I had a thread about this but it’s not getting any traction and I need help. The pen side is rubbing on the tractor body. It’s the drivers side of that helps. Anyway, it looks like it slides on over the steering box splined shaft with no resistance all the way uNtil it seats against the body. I don’t know why but the scant should be conical shaped to keep that from happening. I tried buying arms from this site for a MF35 but the holes in them are way too big for my TO35.

Anyway, at this point I need to source a new set of arms from somewhere and they don’t sell them here. The other option is to shim the arm so it hangs it about 1/2” or more but I don’t know where to get such an item. The arm would then be held on compete by the pressure of the nut.

I think this is what I need but I have no clue if it will solve my problem. Prefer somewhere I can return a part. I guess worst case ill just put the pitman arm on where it will clear everything and tack weld a fat washer behind it to hold it tight. Not ideal and frankly I’m shocked this part isn’t available in the after market.

So, you are saying the arm goes on the shaft so far that the back of the arm contacts the steering gear housing? That can not happen unless the pittman arm is severely wallowed out, or split, or the wrong arm. There is a substantial gap between the back of the arm and the gear housing.

Or is the lower end of the pittman arm is hitting the side of the transmission housing? If so it is bent. If the spline is tight on the shaft (or would be tight if the lower end did not hit the case), and not touching the gear housing, just straighten the arm so it clears the transmission case.

Both arms are the same. Try taking some measurements, switching the arm to the other side.

If one pittman shaft is shorter than the other the steering gear must have been improperly assembled, but I don't see how it could work that way.

Let us know...

What you asked about first is the issue. The back of the pitman arm contacts the body of the tractor at the shaft. My arms are NOT the same, but I’d you say that they should be, then that is the issue. As you said, the shaft is tapered. However the arm that is giving me trouble is not wallowed at all and neither is the shaft.

If what you say is true, then that arm on the drivers side is the wrong arm.

But, thought the arms were different on each side.

parts book shows a right and left pitman arm. Which doesn't preclude you having a wrong piece causing the trouble. Googling the part number for the left pitman arm 180523M1 gets a number of sources of supply.

Well, I've never actually compared the arms, but assumed they were the same. Suspect they are real close.

Did you measure how far the shaft extends out each side of the gear housing?

Agdodge, I had another thought on the steering gear.

On each side of the gear housing, there is a cover where each pittman shaft goes in,

In the center of each cover is an adjustment screw to set the gear lash. If the screw is backed out, or somehow has worn the end off, that would let the pittman shaft move too far in on the splined end.

This is just a thought, never actually seen it happen, just something to check.

I see the screw adjustment. It is all there and intact. It's pretty rusted over though. I wouldnt attempt to turn it.

The splined shaft on the left side (problem side) sticks out 46.44mm, on the right side it sticks out 45.xx mm. In other words, the problem side actually has more shaft to work with.

I did measure the output shaft and it is in fact tapered. The taper on the pitman arm for that side actually seems like the taper is REVERSED. In other words, it can never snug up as the part that should be smallest is actually the fattest. Anyway, the part number stamped on the problematic arm is 3840 06.....I cannot find a reference to it anywhere.

You can search used parts on the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association and contact the suppliers directly, this URL has been filtered out before sore replace [dot] with .

https://dlrparts[dot]alliedinfo[dot]net/aqs/NTPDA/search?q=180523M1 use part number 180522M1 for the other side.

You can always ask the supplier to measure the part before shipping it.

Here is a pic of the 2 pitman arms off a 35
