TE20 AXLE SHIMS AND GASKETS

Inherited a TE20 with a recent home purchase, needed to maintain the Private Gravel Road.This is my first tractor and dealing with road maintenance.The tractor is in poor shape. I noticed the left side axle was leaking fluid. Ordered 2 outer axle gaskets and a Sure Seal. During disassembly I found a shim sandwiched between 2 gaskets on the outside of the Brake Back Plate, and another gasket behind the plate (that's 3 gaskets). The Parts List identifies the quantity need as 4 (2 per side I assumed). I installed the Sure Seal, replaced the two outside gasket, reused the inner gasket and put it back together. Filled with fluid, it leaks, tightened the axle bolts, still leaks. My question: my manual shows the shim and one gasket on the inside of the Brake Back Plate with the shim against the axle housing, then a gasket, and the second gasket on the outside. Should I of followed the manual diagram? The manual doesn't show the Brake Back Plate in the Axle diagram. Any reason someone would of reversed the shim location and added a gasket? Does the shim need gaskets on both sides? It was a full days work doing it wrong the first time!

John Deere has given you great info. Regarding shims, with both wheels elevated, if you turn one, the other should turn backwards if
they are shimmed correctly. If other wheel doesn't turn at all, shimmed too much. As noted in John's info, if they try to turn same
way it is shimmed too tight.

Bob thanks for the diagrams and instructions. I did not check the end play, but will. Still wondering why mine was put together incorrectly. Why 3 gaskets? Why the shim was on the front not back of the Brake Back Plate? Why all the diagrams only show one gasket, but a sentence in your reply says shim would go between the gaskets (2) installed behind the Plate. I'm wondering if instead of installing another shim they just added another gasket?? Again thanks for the info.

That may be exactly what happened. Someone needed one more shim and used a gasket instead. Now here is my question. How is oil getting past the sure seal? Or am I confused here?

The oil is not coming out the front of the axle, it is coming out behind the Brake Backing Plate and axle housing. According to the info sent by John Deere, between the Brake Backing Plate and Axle Housing is where you start with two gaskets. You then do the bearing test, if not correct shim(s) are added between the gaskets. In my case the gaskets and shim where on the other side. Didn't find a torque for the bolts, but used a breaker bar to tighten them, it didn't help. Don't forget that is where I reused the old gasket as there were three gaskets, I only ordered two as the Parts List requires 4 (2 per side). I've ordered more gaskets.
