Inherited a TE20 with a recent home purchase, needed to maintain the Private Gravel Road. This is my first tractor and dealing with road maintenance. The tractor is in poor shape. I noticed the left side axle was leaking fluid. Ordered 2 outer axle gaskets and a Sure Seal. During disassembly I found a shim sandwiched between 2 gaskets on the outside of the Brake Back Plate, and another gasket behind the plate (that's 3 gaskets). The Parts List identifies the quantity need as 4 (2 per side I assumed). I installed the Sure Seal, replaced the two outside gasket, reused the inner gasket and put it back together. Filled with fluid, it leaks, tightened the axle bolts, still leaks. My question: my manual shows the shim and one gasket on the inside of the Brake Back Plate with the shim against the axle housing, then a gasket, and the second gasket on the outside. Should I of followed the manual diagram? The manual doesn't show the Brake Back Plate in the Axle diagram. Any reason someone would of reversed the shim location and added a gasket? Does the shim need gaskets on both sides? It was a full days work doing it wrong the first time!
