Engine Back fire

Tractor not running smooth , cleaned plugs and set the gap . Ran lots better for about half an hour then started missing again . Shut engine off and after it quit running there was a loud pop like a back fire though the muffler . It's 1959 TO - 35 with the ---ZB - 134 Continental gas engine . ID . No. SHM -197273 . I'v used this tractor for 30 years and it's never done that before as far as the back fire . It came with Champion D23 spark plugs but i have tried using others but number 1 plug will oil up after about 8 hours so i have used the D23 for 30 years just because it runs better and won't oil up for a couple of weeks or longer . So is this ignition problem or fuel problem ? Thanks in advance for any help other wise i will just start going though every thing until i find it .

It will backfire if the throttle is too far open when you shut it off, so would assume you had it open off idle to keep it running. You have to troubleshoot the base issue, could be anything. I would just put in a hotter set of plugs for now, it is probably pumping oil.

No it was just missing more than normal and i always drop it to idle when i shut it off and it never died on it's own . Just a loud pop out the exhaust after it was off . I don't know how hot the D23 plugs are but the ones they bring out to me that are supposed to be correct just won't last any time at all . I guess i can get another set of D23 and if it's not better then go on to distributor and fuel system . Got lot's of time now since so many things are closed and locked up around here so i can't go much . But thanks .

One cylinder missing can put enough un-burned hydrocarbons in the exhaust to pop. I think you will end up doing a teardown, might as well try the plugs first.

Generally exhaust pop is caused by ignition problems, unburned fuel in the exhaust that ignites causing the explosion.

Check the ignition system over, check the distributor shaft for side play. It needs to be tight or the points won't stay set. Arcing or improperly adjusted points are a common problem, and will cause exhaust backfire.

Loose connections, failing ignition switch, carbon arced or wet distributor cap, vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks also contribute.

But if it has an oil fouled plug, that alone is enough to cause it. If the cylinder is regularly fouling the plug, and there is no underlying cause, like weak spark to the plug, missing or bad thermostat, clogged air cleaner mesh (inside the canister, often overlooked), try using a non fouler on that cylinder. Not the best solution, but will buy some time until it can be repaired.

Oil burning causes excess carbon. Gasoline soaks the carbon and the running engine makes a hot spot.
Turning off the engine does not turn off the fuel. You just turned off the electrical. That hot spot still has fuel in the cylinder and a
partial throttle will get a backfire.
Throttle all the way down and shut it down should eliminate it or try shutting down in gear.
Time for a new engine, eh?

The fouling plug is probably due to a bad valve seal or worn valve guide. I don't think you need a complete tear down or a new engine. Just some head work. But, when was the last time it had a good tune-up? Points, rotor, cap etc.

Thanks to all I got it going now , just needed a little tune up . Drove 2 miles to the NAPA store . Got new spark plugs , Distributor cap , points , condenser , rotor , fuel filter . Runs real good now and probably will until no. one cylinder gets oil but that will be about October probably . I will clean or change that plug out if the rest look good . I have to have it running good for snow removal some winters .

New engine would be nice but since i am 79 years old and only use it to cut weeds , clean snow off the drive way and use the loader to lift and move things around . So for me it would be a poor investment . If it quits me and i can't take care of my country property i will probably sell out and move in to town .
