A question for the experts..

Well, I tore my To30 down for governor replacement. I ve replaced my camshaft gear with one from a to-20. So now I m waiting for parts to come from yesterday s tractor. Anyhow, I ve been looking the job over to keep it fresh in my mind and one thing has struck me as odd. The governor cage, or race where the balls spin, has a cut out for a keyway. For the life of me I can t remember sliding that off of a keyed shaft. I know The camshaft gear is keyed and it s in place awaiting the new governor.
Am I missing somthing with this? The IT manual shows nothing in regards to this. If the governor is indeed ran off a keyed shaft, then I ve done something wrong.

That governor fits a lot of different engine configurations.

It doesn't use a key on yours.

But do make sure it sits flat against the front of the gear. It may or may not need the shim to make everything fit.

thanks Steve, exactly the information I was looking for. One last question, how can I tell if this will need the shim that s provided or not? What should I look for? My old one didn t have one. Thanks and sorry for the questions... just trying to wrap my mind around this and not to trying to over complicate.

Don't apologize for asking questions. The rest of us learn things from the answers to your questions.

I can't give you an answer that will help but on TO20 that came from factory with fly weight governor and was replaced with Novi ball governor then you needed a shim according IT manual. Even gives the part #. How to tell if you need the shim, that I can't answer.

Hard to say about the shim.

I would compare the old gear with the new gear, compare the old governor with the new, see if there are any differences that would lean toward needing the shim. The early TO20's had a different type governor and probably a different gear. Not sure when it changed or what year your gear came from, just something to look for. Thinking the early gear may have had some tapped holes in the front that would not be in the new design.

The main thing I would look for, does the center of the governor sit flat against the front of the gear? What you don't want is for the nut to draw the center down when it is tightened or distort the shape in any way.

About tightening the nut...

The cam is soft cast iron, easy to snap the end off if the nut is over tightened. Not sure what the torque is, but use caution.

thanks again Steve some of this stuff is lost knowledge and can t be learned from books.
From what I ve seen all the replacement gears have the four tapped holes, that way they can be used universal for the 20 s and 30 s. My gear didn t have these holes, my used replacement does. From what I read in my initial IT book the torque specs is 75ft lbs... I thought that to be a heavy torque, so I researched further and found that was a typo. The actual torque is 35ft lbs.
I ll have to check and see if I need a shim or not. Thanks again guys for all your input!
Now I m just waiting for parts, I can t seem to get ahold of yesterday s tractors customer service to check on my order.. always 27th or 23 rd in line. I guess I ll wait it out. I was curious as to if the virus had slowed the shipping times and if so by how much.. I m not too worried Though
