Clutch and brake bushings

On a TO-30 how loose should the clutch shaft be? I installed new bushings and put the shaft back in. It is a snug fit and the shaft moves but not freely. If I push the pedal down it does not come up on its own. Slightly pulling up it moves back to neutral. Should it spring back on it?s own or will the engine push it back? I would think it should work like a car clutch. My testing is done with engine off. Wondering if I should ream the bushings or is the springs to weak? Mike

car clutch is the correct belief. Chances are the ends got mushroomed from installation.
Reaming is an option
 
It should be free to return by spring pressure. You don't want the release bearing riding on the pressure plate fingers.

Sounds like it's real close to working. Maybe tap the shaft with a hammer will flatten any mushrooming of the bushing.

Trying to hand ream something like that is difficult. If you have to take it apart try scraping the bushings with a knife and stick the shaft part way through and try to wallow the bushing a little. It should loosen up.
 
I took the clutch shaft out and the left hand outter bushing will slide in and out of the case with small pressure. Do I need to order more bushings and see if I got a bad one or add some type of sealant adhear the bushing to the case. Nothing to strong but just to keep it from spinning?

I just changed my clutch and brake shaft bushings. Mine were also tight. I wrapped some 220 sandpaper around a wooden dowel and made them fit with a little sanding. It doesn't take much.
You could use a some locktite on the one that slips out. Its pushing out because its tight on the shaft. Once the shaft is in place it will stay put.
By the way the cast iron casing is wide enough for two clutch shaft bushings on each side. Twice the trouble but more support for the shaft. I also drilled for zerk fittings so I can grease the bushings. At a parts store buy a 1/4-20 tap with drill. Drill at an angle to the center.
 

You can make the bushing that's slipping out easy tighter by removing it and putting a flat tip screwdriver in the split seam and twisting to flex it open some. That will make it fit tighter.
 
I used a small 3 point hone stone for brake
pucks. Now the shaft slides on smooth and
it returns under the spring pressure. I
operated the clutch pedal numerous times
and I can't see the bearing move. Do u
think the bearing will start to spin with
the engine running and under more of a
load?

want to put everything back together and
take it back apart for a spinning bushing.
It is only rotating maybe a third of a
revolution. Just dont have much experience
with these so that's why I'm reaching out.

If you bent that split bushing inward during all your work on it you can take it out and stretch it outward a little so its tighter in the bore. Just so you have to compress it a little to get it in. Don't distort it too much.
Otherwise put some locktite on the outside of the bushing and slip it in.
It shouldn't spin from engine vibration but its better if it fits snug.
That clutch shaft only turns about 1/4 of a rotation when you clutch. You want the shaft to rotate on the bushing and not spin in the outer casting. You know that already.

Your casting may be worn out of round if the old bushing was worn bad. Use some J .B. epoxy to tighten it up.
It won't take much to hold it
 

You may have got grease on the outside of the bushing working on it. Clean that out and just light grease on the shaft and inside of bushing
