Hi to all - new member to group. I have a TO-20 which i don't use much and last fall i fired her up and it doesn't want to run unless i use full choke and even then doesn't have a lot of power. I am not the most mechanical of people so keep suggestions as simple as possible. thanks in advance.

i had already posted on tractor talk forum so am reposting here as well.

Welcome to the far side. That TO-20 is not unlike the Ford 9, 2 and 8N along with a few dozen others. I redid the wife's manifold with a
straight edge. If your using any sort of paper gasket, you can lightly coat it with grease and let it set for a minute or two before
installing it. That grease will help it seal up.
Once it stops running on full choke, it should get a bit more power.

Someone mentioned a plugged carb jet possibly being plugged.
I remember in days gone by that holding my hand partially over the throat of a carb would get the gas 'flowing backwards' through the jets.
Basically flooding it out. At the last second, pull your hand off and open the throttle wide open to keep it from stalling.
Your full choke action pretty much has the same results.

Hope your TO-20 has an old clutch in it. New clutch disc have more steel in them and tend to seize to the flywheel.

I saw you got a lot of good responses on Tractor Talk.

All I add here is my own story. I once had the same symptoms you describe--my TO30 wouldn't run except with full choke.

After checking many things, in the end I discovered I had a small piece of grit plugging up my carb. When I got it cleaned up it ran beautifully again.

Not saying this is your problem. Just that it could be your problem. Try the easier stuff first if you've not had the carb apart before.

I was fortunate to have a friend who helped me disassemble the first time. These carbs are not actually that complicated, but it was nice to have an experienced person there the first time I took it apart to clean it.
