Strange clutch problem on my TED20

Many moons ago I split my TED20 and replaced the clutch. I never quite finished the job, but today I put everything back together got tractor running again. I decided to give it a small text drive, so started the tractor, foot on clutch and popped it into first.

The tractor suddenly lurched forward and started driving and I quickly shut it down. I realised at that point I had forgotten to readjust the new clutch. So I adjusted it as per the diagram in the manual with 3/8 free play in the pedal.

I went to start it up again but now it the shifter feels like it is stuck in neutral. I cannot change into any gear or start it. Furthermore it is not actually in neutral. I cannot roll the tractor and I see the fan rotate as I rock it back and forth, so it appears to be stuck in gear.

I tried adjusting the clutch as much as possible but it did not help the situation.

This has me stumped at the moment, can anybody shed any light on what might be going on and how to fix it?

Ok so I turned the engine over by hand easily from the pulley and now somehow the tractor is neutral and I can shift and start it.

Now I guess I just have a clutch adjustment issue, as I cannot get it to disengage.

Did you check the shaft the clutch bearing rides on? Rust free? perhaps a light coat of Moly grease applied?
Tighten up the free play from 3/8 to 3/16. Try again.

Does the clutch try to release at all?

If the free play in the pedal is set, and it will not release, could be it is stuck with rust, especially if it has sat for a long time and was exposed to high humidity or rain.

Other possibility, a defective pressure plate, the disc was installed backward, or damaged during the reassembly.

You mean you put the clutch assembly together a year ago and just now got around to the rest of it?
You mean you have a frozen clutch because you didn't block it open?
You mean you didn't put in a Kevlar clutch disc? Those don't freeze in place.
Kevlar has it's own problems. Wife's TO-20 has Kevlar.
The new modern clutch disc are removing asbestos, copper and zinc. More steel. More ability to freeze to the flywheel.
How are your brakes? Good?
You need good brakes to unfreeze a stuck clutch.
Or tear it apart and do it again.

The ball end of the gear stick has probably jammed over the selector slots , shown in the photographs here . Usually this is caused by lifting the stick when changing rear instead of pushing down . You can reset it by removing the stick and aligning the slots or you can release it through the gear box oil filler hole . Be careful not to damage the threads of the hole as it is only alloy and soft at that . Use a big screwdriver and lever the large gear you can see through the hole forward and backwards until the stick releases . Do this on a level hard surface if you can with brakes off . If you do remove the stick look at the ball end , if it's really worn you can build up the end with weld and grind smooth , once done it will outlast you .
